Io son Ramon lo Foll takes its name from the 13th-century Mallorcan philosopher Raimundus Lullus, who wrote the line in his autobiography. It is scored for 19-division trumpet and percussion, with granulated electronic sounds cued by the performers. Each player plays according to a stopwatch; though the parts are fully notated and give prescribed tempo and rhythm indications, including precise times to begin cues, they are not coordinated in a traditional manner of ensemble playing. The electronic sounds are processed from trumpet sounds, as well as amplified sounds produced by/in the trumpet player's head and mouth. The original sounds were produced by Steve Altoft in 2002 (trumpet) and 2008 (head/mouth).
The sound file linked below gives a 'mock-up' of the electronic sounds; their precise 'constellation' will, however, vary from one performance to the next.
