Philipp Blume: Composer

Büxn=Aufschrifftn

Büxn=Aufschrifftn (1999) for alto flute (doubling piccolo), violin, soprano voice, contrabass, harp, and percussion, is an interpretation of Arno Schmidt's extremely worthwhile novel Kaff, auch Mare Crisium, whose story takes place alternately on the Earth and on the Moon. The piece, which also commutes between these locations, explores various ways of translating text into music, and vice versa. The piece was written at the request of the Ensemble Spinoff (now defunct), for a concert that also included George Crumb's Madrigal books and Spinoff, by Charles Wuorinen. The players needed a piece that combined these two instrumentations. Personnel on this recording: Ortrun Kestel, flutes; Dorothea Schüle, violin; Barbara Schedel, soprano; Sven Kestel, contrabass; Maria Stange, harp; and Lee Forrest Ferguson, percussion. Conducted by Alistair Zaldua. June 26, 1999.
