Philipp Blume: Composer

Home

Hello and welcome to my website! My name is Philipp Blume. I am a composer, mostly of chamber music (with or without electronics), who earned a Ph.D. in 2006 from the University of California, Berkeley. I currently teach at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. My music, characterized by richness of detail and new approaches to musical narrative, has been featured in the US, Canada, Venezuela and Argentina; and in France, Germany and the UK. My work has been recognized by the Berlin Academy of Arts (Busoni Prize 2005), the Fondation Royaumont (Voix Nouvelles 1999), the Ensemble-Akademie Villa Musica (Composer Residency 2009), and Schloss Solitude (Young Composers Academy 2003).

At present I am at work on a chamber music cycle entitled Rausch des Vergessens (details here). It will consist of seven works of varying instrumentation, with five epilogues for solo piano. The individual pieces are extractable, and the piano epilogues can also be performed separately as an independent cycle. The most recent event connected to this cycle was the premiere of Kennst Du das Land? by the Ensemble dal Niente with Maestro Scott Voyles, which took place in March 2012.

If you are interested in my compositional work, you can visit the Compositions page. It contains audio, scores, and program notes for your perusal. For my resume and biographical information, see the Biography page. Finally, I welcome your comments or emails through the Contact page. Enjoy!
